Mazan bears the marks of a long history: a Renaissance gateway from 1515, an 18th-century château now a hotel, a Romanesque church and, in the cemetery, 64 Gallo-Roman sarcophagi. The Marquis de Sade, co-lord of the town, staged theatre performances here in the late 18th century. Today it is a lively small town surrounded by vineyards, cellars and wine estates.
In Mazan cemetery, 62 Christian sarcophagi from the 5th and 6th centuries are lined up along the boundary wall. Within the grounds, the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Pareloup has 11th-century walls. A surprising and peaceful place.
